A proud FSF Scholar since 2004, Alexsandra Del Real has carved out a dynamic career at the intersection of fashion, youth culture, and global branding. Over the past two decades, she has held influential roles at brands like Huf Worldwide, Fox Racing, and Obey Clothing; this year she started a new chapter as a senior product manager at Nike.

Below, she reflects on her FSF experience, the impact of mentorship, and the power of staying humble.

FSF: What’s the most important lesson you learned through FSF?

ADR: Build your brand, and when I say “brand,” I mean yourself. Constantly keep your resume and portfolio updated—you never know what opportunities are ahead.

FSF: How did FSF help you embark on your career—and how do you continue to tap into the community or its resources today?

ADR: Winning the FSF scholarship my junior year allowed me to travel to New York for the very first time. As a young designer, I attended the FSF scholarship fundraiser and sat alongside industry professionals. It taught me networking skills and gave me the confidence to speak with influential leaders.

FSF: Who or what has had the biggest influence on your fashion journey so far?

ADR: Action sports, skate, and streetwear culture have significantly shaped my fashion experience. Growing up in Southern California, I was immersed in youth-driven subculture brands that influenced both my style and preferred work environments. Interning at Obey Clothing during college (when it was emerging as a streetwear force) was foundational. Since then, I’ve worked with brands like Fox Racing, Huf Worldwide, and Nike, all of which blend sport and culture in powerful ways.

FSF: Can you tell us about a recent project you’re proud of?

ADR: At Huf, I led a collaboration with Toyota, their first-ever North American streetwear partnership. I pitched the project, negotiated contract terms, curated the assortment and forecasts, and helped shape the creative direction. We launched multiple collections around TRD and Land Cruiser, even wrapping a Toyota vehicle in a custom Huf design. The activation and storytelling were on point and really resonated with our audience.

FSF: What role do you see mentorship playing in the future of fashion?

ADR: Building relationships is critical to long-term success in this industry. Some of my most important career moves came through connections, not applications. At the beginning of your career, mentors are essential. But over time, it’s important to know when to grow beyond them and step into becoming your own mentor.

FSF: Are there any lessons from your time as an FSF Scholar or Alumni that continue to resonate with you today?

ADR: Change is constant. Brands, trends, and consumer habits are always evolving. Designers should also understand the business side of the industry. My career has recently transitioned into product management, and understanding the why behind product creation has opened new doors beyond design.

FSF: Any upcoming projects you’d like to share?

ADR: Stay tuned… 😉

FSF: In a few words, the future of fashion is _____.                                                           ADR: Repurposed.

FSF: Anything else you’d like to add?

ADR: Stay humble. Be kind. You never know who you’ll work with again—maybe someone you once managed will be your boss someday. And most importantly: HAVE FUN!
